Master of photography: Goran Šafarek

The TBR MDD photographer and filmmaker Goran Šafarek spends a great deal of his time in the pursuit of the perfect picture, portraying wildlife at its best.

Goran Šafarek is a biologist, photographer, and videographer who was honoured in a leading national newspapers as one of the top 100 people making a better Croatia. He furthermore received a gold medal in his hometown Koprivnica for his work on sustainable development and nature conservation. He is the author of several independent photography exhibitions and he held numerous popular lectures throughout Croatia.

In the past, Goran was involved in a number of different projects - within the TBR MDD; he was actively participating in the UNDP project on the restoration of wetland habitats along the Drava River, as well as in the UNESCO project proposal of the Drava-Mura Biosphere Reserve and the biological inventory along the Drava River, led by the WWF. As a member of the RiverWatch team, Goran monitored river stretches within the TBR MDD on a regularly basis to spot and report any destructive activities, such as gravel extractions or embankment works.

His work also enabled him to take part in a vast number of expeditions around the globe, travelling to amazing places, such as South America, Asia and Africa. A highlight of his travels happened during an expedition in Madagascar, when the coloured snake was discovered in the Masoala National Park.

In addition to the publication of several hundred papers in journals (e.g. GEO, National Geographic and Moj Planet), as well as several books, the cooperation with the Croatian Television enabled him to produce nature documentary films.
