Amazon of Europe Day & BIG JUMP

Austrian and Slovenian celebrations

On Sunday, the "Amazon of Europe" Day was celebrated along the border Mura, the river that was formerly separating, but connecting Austria and Slovenia. The traditional Big Jump was the highlight of the celebrations and as always great fun, enabling young & old to join in the event.

WWF project leader Arno Mohl says: "The "Amazon of Europe" has the potential to become a peace-making project of the century. The best possible integration of the local population in five European countries is key to the successful implementation of this unprecedented initiative. The transboundary Big Jump is an ambassador to raise awareness of the importance of this unique area."

Georg Pock, director of “Genuss am Fluss” sees the "Amazon of Europe" Day with the Big Jump as something very special: "Our beautiful region on both sides of the border Mura invites to relax and to slow down. Events such as the "Amazon of Europe" Day & Big Jump strengthens the relationship of our countries,  which will in turn help to promote the border Mura and surrounding area on an European level“.

In total, a few hundred people attended the event throughout the day and sharply at 3pm, brave people from Slovenia and Austria jumped into the cold (but very refreshing!) border Mura, celebrating its beauty and importance for people and nature.
Guided tours through the riparian forests, locally sourced food and drinks, two DJs taking care of entertaining music, boat trips along the Mura and the WWF “River Tent” for younger guests - all that was on the programme. To sum up: again, it was a great day which will be hopefully repeated next year!
