New River Restoration Plans to Support the EU Nature Restoration Law

As part of the LIFE RESTORE for MDD project, work has begun on creating new river restoration plans for three sections along the Mura and Drava rivers in Croatia, Slovenia and Hungary. These plans are designed to support the implementation of the EU Nature Restoration Law and promote further restoration efforts within the UNESCO Five-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube.

In May, project partners conducted field visits to the pilot sections. Working alongside external experts, local stakeholders and public authorities, they assessed the ecological potential of each site in order to identify priority measures that could restore natural river dynamics, reconnect floodplains and revive sediment flows.

The restoration planning process, which will continue into autumn, is based on extensive ecological and technical analysis. It will then be developed further in a participatory process involving a broad range of stakeholders to ensure that the proposed measures are effective, inclusive and tailored to local contexts.

In Croatia, the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition has confirmed that the restoration plans developed through the project will be incorporated into the country’s national restoration plans. Close collaboration with ministries in Slovenia and Hungary is ongoing to embed the planning approach into national frameworks.
