How can we protect rivers, forests and wetlands in our everyday lives? This question was at the heart of this year’s Biosphere Reserve Day, held on 25 April at Tettye Square and the Pintér Garden Arboretum in Pécs, Hungary.
Organised in connection with Earth Day, the event brought around 3,000 visitors together to learn more about the UNESCO Five-country Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube and the natural values it protects. Held for the third time at the headquarters of the Duna-Dráva National Park Directorate, the Biosphere Reserve Day has become an important occasion for nature education, public outreach and cooperation in Hungary.
All three Hungarian partner organisations involved in the LIFE RESTORE for MDD project were represented at the event: the Duna-Dráva National Park Directorate as host and co-organiser, the Balaton-felvidéki National Park Directorate with an information stand, and WWF-Hungary with a guided tour starting from the event venue.
Throughout the day, visitors could discover the special features of the Biosphere Reserve through interactive activities and practical examples. Topics included composting, water and energy saving, selective waste collection and simple ways to use water more carefully in everyday life. Nature-themed quizzes, 3D-printed animal skulls and skeletons, an animal show, a book reuse fair, a reading park and guided tours of the Pintér Garden Arboretum made nature protection tangible for people of all ages.
