Land purchase activities along the Croatian Mura in Međimurje County are progressing as part of the LIFE RESTORE for MDD project. Through the project, privately owned forest land within the Natura 2000 site is being purchased and secured for nature conservation. Once acquired, these areas will be left to natural succession, allowing floodplain forests to regenerate and providing improved habitats for rare and endangered plant and animal species.
A second information event for landowners and potential sellers was held on 4 March 2026 at the Poduzetnički centar in Prelog to support this process. Building on the success of the first event held last March, this meeting aimed to further build trust with local landowners, provide a detailed explanation of the purchase process, and address practical questions regarding the future management of the land. More than 40 people attended.
Representatives of the Međimurje Nature Public Institution and Green Osijek presented the LIFE RESTORE for MDD project, explaining why purchasing land is an important tool for restoring floodplain forests and outlining how interested landowners can participate. The event also provided an opportunity for direct discussion, during which participants asked questions about ownership, the purchase process, and the long-term vision for the restored forest areas.
The response was very positive. Several landowners expressed the willingness to contribute to the restoration efforts by selling their land. As a direct result of the event, around 9 hectares of forest land were offered to the Međimurje Nature Public Institution.
This strong local response marks another step forward for land purchase activities in Croatia and demonstrates the importance of engaging with landowners to secure more space for nature along the Mura.
