At this year’s Mura Festival, primary school and preschool children discovered the UNESCO Mura Biosphere Reserve through educational workshops, outdoor exploration and play, gaining a closer understanding of the Mura River and its rich biodiversity.

Around 300 children took part in eight events held along the river, where they explored their local environment through hands-on activities. The workshops were supported by staff from Institute of the Republic of Slovenia for Nature Conservation and the Slovenian Water Agency, as well as students from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics completing their practical training.

Through interactive games, creative workshops and outdoor exploration, the children learned about the Mura River and its unique ecosystems. They discovered characteristic species such as beavers, dragonflies, wild pollinators, bats, birds, amphibians and butterflies, while also learning about their habitats and ecological importance.

By giving children direct contact with nature, the festival aims to raise awareness of nature conservation and highlight the importance of preserving biodiversity and natural river processes. Encouraging curiosity, observation and active learning helps foster a deeper appreciation of the Mura River’s natural heritage and inspires younger generations to value and protect it.
