The spring cycle of Rivers’cool, implemented by the Public Institution for the Management of Protected Areas in Varaždin County, has been successfully completed.
Five groups of primary school and preschool children took part in the spring cycle. Activities for school pupils were held in the Drava Forest Park in Varaždin, while the kindergarten workshop was adapted to the children’s age and familiar surroundings.
Through interactive activities, observation and direct contact with nature, the children learned about the Drava River and the Mura-Drava Regional Park. During the “Forest Quest”, they explored forest plants and layers, discovered which animals live in different parts of the forest, and learned about rare and endangered bird species and their habitats.
The children also built bird nests, explored natural materials through touch and discovered through play why rivers, floodplain forests and their habitats are important for biodiversity.
The spring programme showed how outdoor learning can make nature conservation engaging and accessible, while adapted activities also successfully introduced younger children to these topics in a kindergarten setting.
