The traditional hike along the Mura River took place on Sunday, 1 February this year, starting in Gornja Bistrica. Participants set off on a scenic route through Gornja, Srednja and Dolnja Bistrica, much of which followed the Mura itself, including its side channels and oxbows.
The theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day was ‘Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage!’ – was a perfect match for the event. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions, around 400 hikers came together to explore and celebrate this remarkable wetland landscape.
The eight-kilometre route showcased some of the Mura’s most striking natural features, including gravel banks, riverbank cliffs and the best-preserved oxbow on the Slovenian stretch of the river: the Bobri oxbow. This exceptional site also served as the main rest stop, where hikers could enjoy traditional local refreshments.
Back at the start/finish point, participants were once again greeted with local cuisine, providing a warm and hearty end to the day.
We are already looking ahead to next year, when the traditional Wetlands Day hike will take us across the border to Austria.
